Since the introduction of the Sunday Trading Act in 1994, there have been many more retail outlets that have opened in England and Wales on Sundays, including beauty salons and hair stylists. Shops which are over 280 square metres in size are still restricted in the hours they can open and are only allowed to be open for up to six consecutive hours on Sundays, for instance. Larger operators must also close on Easter Sunday by law. However, since most hairdressers open on Sunday are smaller than this the restrictions do not apply to many of them. In all of the major cities and towns of the UK, hairdressers open on Sunday regularly nowadays, meaning that both walk-in customers and appointments are catered for. In Scotland, all sorts of shops – including hairdressers – open on Sunday, too, but the law allows employees to opt out of working on Sundays if they wish.
