What is a car service?

A motor vehicle service, car service, van service is a series of maintenance procedures which are undertaken at set time intervals or after an allocated number of miles. The service intervals are specified by each vehicle and car manufacturer in a service schedule and some newer vehicles and cars display on the instrument panel the next date or how many miles until the next service is due.

Car Service on Sunday

A motor vehicle service or car service, is normally noted and recorded in the vehicle or car service book once it has been carried out.  This usually carries the official rubber stamped by the service centre upon completion of each service. A car with a complete service history usually aids a sale and can add to the resale value of a vehicle.

Maintenance tasks commonly carried out during a motor vehicle service include:

  • Changing the engine oil.
  • Replacing the oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and spark plugs.
  • Tuning the engine.
  • Checking the level and refilling the brake fluid, power steering fluid and automatic transmission fluid.
  • Checking the condition of the tyres tread and pressure.
  • Checking and replacing the timing belt.
  • Greasing and lubricating other components as required.
  • Checking the clutch and gear box.
  • Checking the car battery condition and charging system.
  • Checking and refilling anti-freeze, windscreen wash.
  • Checking the lights, windscreen wipers.
  • Full brake check, steering check, shock absorbers, suspension check and exhaust condition.

A full service will also include checking the;

  • auxiliary drive belt.
  • wheel alignment.
  • wheel bearing.

During the car service if any mechanical parts cause the car to stop running or be unsafe for the road, it is noted and the owner is advised about them.

Interim Service and Full Service

There are normally two types of service:

a) Interim service.

b) Full service.

Often referred to as a small or large service. A full service is carried out every 12 months or every 12,000 miles. An interim service is every 6,000 miles or 6 months. Interim Services are for vehicles used for short, mainly urban journeys or for those who wish to maintain vehicles doing very high mileage more regularly. An Interim Service helps keep your car safe and roadworthy between full services.

Today’s modern cars often need computer diagnostics during the service, especially if the car has sensors, advanced brakes, advanced ignition and steering and complex electrical components.

A Manufacturer Service

A manufacturer’s service can maintain the car’s warrantee and is specific to the car’s age, make, model and mileage.  These services can be undertaken at dealerships or local garages which may be cheaper but they must follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

How long does a car service on Sunday take?

A car service may be completed within a couple of hours or half a day.  In some cases it may be necessary to have the car in the garage for a whole day and sometimes longer if spare parts have to be ordered. A car service does not take any longer whether it is on a Sunday or a weekday.
